FEATURED ARTIST : Suzanne E. Lovejoy
Suzanne and Astrid at the FF
Suzanne and daughter Astrid at the Fifth Annual Jamaica Fiber Festival, weaving together on the community weaving.

Margaret learned to weave from Suzanne Lovejoy when Suzanne collaborated with Thomas Golding and Jan Elliott to create a venue for teaching the craft. Tom and Jan wanted to offer weaving classes, figured out a way to build several looms, and solicited Suzanne’s help in instructing interested students. Margaret was one of those initial students, being in the right place at the right time, and her life has never been the same. One person can change the direction of another’s life! In this case, it was a serendipitous and fortuitous meeting, one for which Margaret has been grateful since. Suzanne is a master with chenille and color blending, and her beautifully tailored hand woven clothing is available for purchase at Margie’s Muse. It feels good to give back in this small way – by selling her work. It’s also great to have her work displayed in the shop for sheer inspiration. Have her design a piece for you. Come see!

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I was initially drawn to the loom as a machine-- how could all those moving parts create cloth out of so many threads? Once I learned the mechanics, I experimented with the two aspects of craft I find the most interesting: texture and color. A weaver can manipulate individual threads to create subtle changes in small works.

Handweaving has a long history throughout the world. The use of contemporary fibers and colors brings it full circle. I strive for a marriage of beauty and function in my garments by blending the sensual texture of chenille with rich, saturated color. My garments are classically simple with special attention to finishing details which sets them apart.
